Even or negative splits

# Split calculator & pace band

Turn a goal time into a split for every kilometre or mile, then print a pace band for your wrist.

## How to plan your splits

Enter the race distance and the time you are aiming for, then choose kilometre or mile splits. Each row shows the split for that stretch and the time on the clock when you reach it; the last row covers any part-kilometre or part-mile to the finish.

**Even** pacing runs every split at the same pace. A **negative split** runs the second half faster than the first: at 2%, the second half takes 2% less time than the first. For a 2:00:00 half marathon that is 1:00:36 for the first half and 59:24 for the second, each at a steady pace.

Every elapsed time is rounded to the nearest second, and the splits are the differences between them, so they always add up to your target exactly.

**Print pace band** prints only the band, about 18 cm wide. Cut along the dashed line, wrap it round your wrist and cover it with clear tape.

## Questions

**What is a negative split?**

Running the second half of a race faster than the first. Here the percentage compares the two halves’ times, and within each half the pace is even.

**Why are my even splits not all the same?**

A 2:00:00 half marathon needs 5:41.3 per km, and a split you can aim for has whole seconds. Most splits read 5:41 and now and then one reads 5:42, which keeps the total at exactly 2:00:00.

**Can I make mile splits for a race in kilometres?**

Yes. Enter the distance in either unit and choose Mile under Splits every; a marathon gives 26 mile splits plus the last 0.22 miles.
